Poole on 2 Samuel 22:33-51: God's Effectual Help against Enemies

Verse 33:[1]  God is my (Ex. 15:2; Ps. 27:1; 28:7, 8; 31:4; Is. 12:2) strength and power:  and he (Heb. 13:21) maketh (Heb. riddeth, or, looseth[2]) my way (Deut. 18:13; Job 22:3; Ps. 101:2, 6; 119:1) perfect.

Verse 34:[3]  He maketh (Heb. equalleth[4]) my feet (2 Sam. 2:18; Hab. 3:19) like hinds’ feet:  and (Deut. 32:13; Is. 33:16; 58:14) setteth me upon my high places.

Verse 35:[5]  (Ps. 144:1) He teacheth my hands to war (Heb. for the war[6]); so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms.

Verse 36:[7]  Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation:  and thy gentleness hath made me great (Heb. multiplied me[8]).

Verse 37:[9]  Thou hast (Prov. 4:12) enlarged my steps under me; so that my feet (Heb. ankles[10]) did not slip.

Verse 38:[11]  I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; and turned not again until I had consumed them.

Verse 39:[12]  And I have consumed them, and wounded them, that they could not arise:  yea, they are fallen (Mal. 4:3) under my feet.

Verse 40:[13]  For thou hast (Ps. 18:32, 39) girded me with strength to battle:  (Ps. 44:5) them that rose up against me hast thou subdued (Heb. caused to bow[14]) under me.

Verse 41:[15]  Thou hast also given me the (Gen. 49:8; Ex. 23:27; Josh. 10:24) necks of mine enemies, that I might destroy them that hate me.

Verse 42:[16]  They looked, but there was none to save; even (Job 27:9; Prov. 1:28; Is. 1:15; Mic. 3:4) unto the LORD, but he answered them not.

ree

Verse 43:[17]  Then did I beat them as small (2 Kings 13:7; Ps. 35:5; Dan. 2:35) as the dust of the earth, I did stamp them (Is. 10:6; Mic. 7:10; Zech. 10:5) as the mire of the street, and did spread them abroad.

Verse 44:[18]  (2 Sam. 3:1; 8:1; 19:9, 14; 20:1, 2, 22) Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept me to be (Deut. 28:13; 2 Sam. 8:1-14; Ps. 2:8) head of the heathen:  (Is. 55:5) a people which I knew not shall serve me.

Verse 45:[19]  Strangers (Heb. sons of the stranger[20]) shall submit themselves (or, yield feigned obedience:  Heb. lie;[21] see Deut. 33:29;[22] Ps. 66:3;[23] 81:15[24]) unto me:  as soon as they hear, they shall be obedient unto me.

Verse 46:[25]  Strangers shall fade away, and they shall be afraid (Mic. 7:17) out of their close places.

Verse 47:[26]  The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the (Ps. 89:26) rock of my salvation.

Verse 48:[27]  It is God that (1 Sam. 25:39; 2 Sam. 18:19, 31) avengeth me (Heb. giveth avengement to me[28]), and that (Ps. 144:2) bringeth down the people under me…

Verse 49:[29]  And that bringeth me forth from mine enemies:  thou also hast lifted me up on high above them that rose up against me:  thou hast delivered me from the (Ps. 140:1) violent man.

Verse 50:[30]  Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among (Rom. 15:9) the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name.

Verse 51:[31]  (Ps. 144:10) He is the tower of salvation for his king:  and sheweth mercy to his (Ps. 89:20) anointed, unto David, and (2 Sam. 7:12, 13; Ps. 89:29) to his seed for evermore.

Jonathan Edwards' Notes on the Bible: 'The words, Jehovah liveth, summarily comprehended that which they professed in their public profession of religion. They signified hereby their belief of a dependence upon that all-sufficiency and faithfulness that is implied in the name Jehovah, which will appear by the consideration of the following places, Josh 3:10, "Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you." 1 Sam 17:26, "Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?" 1 Sam 17:36, "Seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God." 2 Kings 19:4, "It may be the Lord thy God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria hath sen…

Matthew Henry: 'Let us observe, in this song of praise,

I. How David adores God, and gives him the glory of his infinite perfections....

II. How he triumphs in the interest he has in this God, and his relation to him, which he lays down as the foundation of all the benefits he has received from him: He is my God; as such he cries to him (2 Sam 22:7), and cleaves to him (2 Sam 22:22); "and, if my God, then my rock" (2 Sam 22:2), that is, "my strength and my power (2 Sam 22:33), the rock under which I take shelter (he who is to me as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land),…
