Heidegger's Bible Handbook: Hosea: The Name "Hosea"

4. The typical name of Hosea. Whence his origin?

Therefore, the first is הוֹשֵׁעַ/Hosea, the son of בְּאֵרִי/Beeri, or derived from a well,[1] which Prophet the Hebrews relate to have also been of the tribe of Issachar, originating from the town of Belemot, although they are resting upon no suitable authority. It sounds as if you would say, Save,[2] the same name asהוֹשִׁיָעה נָּא , Hosanna,[3] and יְהוֹשֻׁעַ/Jehoshua, or Joshua. That is, just as הוֹשֵׁעַ/ Hoshea,[4] or the first Joshua, who ἐκληροδότησε τὸν Ἰσραὴλ, led Israel into their inheritance,[5] was a type of the true and only Savior Christ: so also is this Jehoshua or Hosea the Prophet set forth as a type of GOD and of the Savior Christ, Hosea 1:2; 3:2.

[1]בְּאֵר signifies a well or pit. [2]הוֹשֵׁעַ/Hosea is related to the verbal root יָשַׁע, to save. [3] That is, Save, I pray. [4] See Numbers 13:8; Deuteronomy 32:44. [5] Psalm 78:55: “He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided them an inheritance by line (וַֽ֭יַּפִּילֵם בְּחֶ֣בֶל נַחֲלָ֑ה; καὶ ἐκληροδότησεν αὐτοὺς ἐν σχοινίῳ κληροδοσίας, in the Septuagint), and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.”
