Poole on 1 Chronicles 1:38-42: The Sons of Seir

Verse 38:[1] And the (Gen. 36:20) sons of Seir; Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah, and Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan.

[The sons of Seir] This is not Esau, but a Horite of another nation, Genesis 36:20, whose genealogy he describes, so that the descent of Timna, the mother of Amalek, might be understood (Mariana, Lapide, similarly Menochius, Tirinus).

The sons of Seir; one of another nation, prince of the Horims; whose genealogy is here described, because of that affinity which was contracted between his and Esau’s posterity; and those who were not united and incorporated with them were destroyed by them. See Deuteronomy 2:12.

Verse 39:[2] And the sons of Lotan; Hori, and Homam (or, Heman, Gen. 36:22[3]): and Timna was Lotan’s sister.

Verse 40:[4] The sons of Shobal; Alian (or, Alvan, Gen. 36:23[5]), and Manahath, and Ebal, Shephi (or, Shepho, Gen. 36:23), and Onam. And the sons of Zibeon; Aiah, and Anah.

[Alian] Hebrew: עַלְיָן/Alyan, who in Genesis 36:23 is called עַלְוָן/Alvan: but י/y and ו/v are easily exchanged on account of their similarity (Malvenda).

[Shephi, שְׁפִי] Who in Genesis 36:23 is called שְׁפוֹ/Shepho (Malvenda).

Verse 41:[6] The sons of Anah; (Gen. 36:25) Dishon. And the sons of Dishon; Amram (or, Hemdan, Gen. 36:26[7]), and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran.

[Hamram] Hebrew: חַמְרָן/Chamran; who in Genesis 36:26 is חֶמְדָּן/ Chemdan, on account of the similarity of the ר/r and the ד/d (Malvenda).

Verse 42:[8] The sons of Ezer; Bilhan, and Zavan, and Jakan (or, Akan, Gen. 36:27[9]). The sons of Dishan; Uz, and Aran.

[Jakan] Hebrew: יַעֲקָן/Yaakan; who in Genesis 36:27 is called עֲקָן/ Akan (Malvenda).

[3] Genesis 36:22: “And the children of Lotan were Hori and Hemam (וְהֵימָם); and Lotan’s sister was Timna.” [5] Genesis 36:23: “And the children of Shobal were these; Alvan (עַלְוָן), and Manahath, and Ebal, Shepho (שְׁפוֹ), and Onam.” [7] Genesis 36:26: “And these are the children of Dishon; Hemdan (חֶמְדָּן), and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran.” [9] Genesis 36:27: “The children of Ezer are these; Bilhan, and Zaavan, and Akan (וַעֲקָן).”

Poole's Synopsis on Genesis 36:20-28: '[c. 1840 BC] Verse 20:[1] (1 Chron. 1:38) These are the sons of Seir (Gen. 14:6; Deut. 2:12, 22) the Horite, who inhabited the land; Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah…

[The sons of Seir the Horite (thus Vatablus)] Concerning the Horites see Genesis 14:6. It appears that he was a Hivite, verse 2. For Zibeon, there a Hivite, is in verse 24 a Horite (Ainsworth). An enumeration of them is made on account of the intermarriage of Esau and Eliphaz with them, on account of which occasion they dwelt with them, and finally succeeded them in rule (Junius, Dutch, Ainsworth).

The sons of Seir are here mentioned, partly because of their alliance with…

Matthew Henry: 'We shall not have much to say of the Edomites. They had an inveterate enmity to God's Israel; yet because they descended from Esau, the son of Isaac, we have here an account of their families, and the names of some of their famous men, 1 Chronicls 1:35 to the end. Some slight differences there are between some of the names here, and as we had them in Genesis 36, whence this whole account is taken. Three of four names that were written with a Vau there are written with a Jod here, probably the pronunciation being altered, as is usual in other languages. We now write many words very differently from what they were written but 20…
