3. The occasion and argument of the Epistle.


The occasion for writing was furnished by this elect Lady’s children, whom he had heard to be walking in the truth, verse 4. Then he thought to confirm them in the acknowledged truth, with obedience to be rendered to the old command, against the seduction of those that deny that Christ has come in the flesh. Which is the argument of the Epistle.
