Heidegger's Bible Handbook: Joel: Author

1. Joel notes his beginning. His ancestry. He was a Prophet of Judah.

The author of the Prophecy, יוֹאֵל/Joel, which denotes one undertaking,[1] was the son of פְּתוּאֵל/Pethuel, whom some ineptly babble to be Samuel. Concerning his Father, nothing is known with certainty by us beyond his name. Yet, that he taught at Jerusalem, or at least in the tribe of Judah, is gathered for this, that he makes mention of the house of God, Joel 1:9, 14, 16, and of Zion, 2:15.

[1]יָאַל in the Hiphil conjugation signifies to determine, or to undertake.
